An Escape Tunnel

One of the most significant findings was a 32-foot long escape tunnel. It was found in what would have been Camp 2, and the tunnel was supposedly built by the prisoners in the hopes to escape the confines of the horrific camp. Not only was it never finished, but the stories shared by survivors make it that much more tough to know what they were attempting to do. Haimi goes on to say, “Now we can understand the testimonies of survivors. We have survivors from ‘Camp 2’ who said the Germans came and took 100 prisoners to ‘Camp 3,’ where they were all killed. Finding this tunnel fills in the historical record.”

A More Than Sobering Thought

Throughout the entire process of the excavation, there have been major pieces of evidence that team has found of those that lost their lives, like this pair of dentures. There has been one thought that radiates the most, especially to Haimi who lost family members in the horrors of Sobibor. “We are touching the Holocaust,” Haimi shares. “We are not talking about it, we are touching it, physically. Some people say that archeologists play in the sand, but that is not fair.” And with what they have found here, he obviously speaks the truth.
