Her family knew that they needed to continue to fight for Brittany’s cause in other States, California in particular because that was her home state. After they showed a video testimony that Brittany had recorded before she died, it would seem that California legislation would change its tune. And on September 11, 2015, they approved the End of Life Option Act, which went into effect on June 9, 2016. It was a big victory for those pushing for her cause.

Since the Oregon Death with Dignity Act was passed in 1997, there have been over 1,170 individuals who have received prescriptions to end their lives, but many have actually chosen not to use them. The fact, though, that they have a choice in the first place is truly one of the things that Brittany had been fighting for since she made that choice herself. And although she may already be gone, her courageous spirit, and her willingness to fight for her rights, as well as the rights of others, is what has made all the difference. May she Rest In Peace.
