Ho Chi Minh ruled in communist North Vietnam between 1645 and 1969. His rise to power was won through violence and fear, and he almost single-handedly established communism in Vietnam. He instituted land reforms which cost the lives of 100,000 Vietnamese, and his idealism has cost millions of lives more during the years he led his country to a war with South Vietnam and the United States. Because of the war, he brought great poverty, hardships, and death to his people.
