By 1992, Swango was able to reestablish himself as a physician by forging documents. He did say that he was in prison, but he left out the true reason. He falsified his criminal record down to a demeanor that started with a mere fistfight with a colleague. He was able to get away with it until he attempted to join the American Medical Association (AMA).
