On his way to freedom the killer dropped the two watches that he stole and the gun he was using. In 1960, a few years after the murders, a man found one of the watches and the gun in his garden. He turned them over to the police and they were able to identify one of the watches as coming from one of the teenagers who had been assaulted within the site of the murder. The serial number of the gun was traced to a Sears in Louisiana, and was said to belong to George D. Wilson – and the search was on.
