One of the downed officers, Phillips, was one of the best marksmen on the force before he was killed. And before he died, he opened fire at the fleeing Mason. Upon careful examination of the car, they found bullet holes in the car’s trunk and in one of its rear windshields, both had come from Phillips’ gun. A bullet had brushed the suspect’s back. Mason was examined and the telling scar was there. Finally, the El Segundo police had their man.
