Her incriminating phone call in his apartment complex
When police traced the location data from Pam’s mobile phone, one of the locations where she made a phone call was within Gumpenberger’s apartment complex. The call was made between 11:25 a.m. and 11:29 a.m. on August 16. But when she got arrested, Pam refused to give any statement and invoked her right to an attorney. Although, she did admit to shooting Gumpenberger and disclosed that she still had the $150,000 from an insurance payout.
Planted evidence
Police believed that Pam used Gumpenberger to frame Russell for the murder of his wife, Betsy. They also believed that the $900 and a handwritten note found in his pockets at the time of his death were planted by Pam. The handwritten note was carefully written in such a way to make anyone who found it believe that it was an instruction for him to take “Russ’ money” and then kill Pam.
