Just A Few Miles Away
What authorities couldn’t figure out at the time that they were searching for Elizabeth, was that Mitchell had been living in a dug-out shelter just a few miles away from the Smart residence. It was made out of logs and tarp, and was basically a wooded campsite. Elizabeth had even recalled that during the time everyone was searching for her, she had actually heard her uncle’s voice calling out her name. She was too afraid to answer him at the time, remembering Mitchell’s warning of killing her and her loved ones if she made a single peep.
