The assassination of William Goebel

In 1900, William Goebel became the first and only U.S. governor to be assassinated while in office. While Goebel was walking to the Old State Capitol, he was shot by an unknown gunman. This was after he won the hotly contested governorship election in Kentucky. Despite his gun wound, he lived and sworn in the following day. Three days later, however, he died. Some of his political rivals were suspected of the murder. However, the actual killer remains unidentified.
