Pain in the upper middle portion of the abdomen, also known as the epigastric area, is commonly caused by sores in the lining of the lower part of the esophagus, the stomach, and the first part of the small intestine. Collectively, these three are known as Peptic Ulcer Disease.

PUD pain is described as a burning sensation in epigastric part of the abdomen which often occurs after meals. The sores that cause pain in PUD is the result of an overpopulation of a bacteria known as H. Pylori.

Treatment for PUD include drugs that prevent the secretion of acid in the stomach (proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers), neutralize the acid produced by the stomach (antacids), and kill the bacteria (H.Pylori) (antibiotics).
