Kidney Stones, medically known as uroliths, are common causes of pain in the left lower quadrant of the abdomen. These calcium or uric acid stones, depending on their size, can also find their way down the ureter, the passageway of urine coming from the kidneys towards the urinary bladder.

When this happens, urine is prevented from reaching the bladder, causing severe and debilitating pain that radiates toward the back and groin. The pain comes in waves and could sometimes be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Other signs include bloody urine and a strong urge to take a leak despite having little or no output at all.
