One of the hikers, Stuart Hutchison, says that when he found Beck, ‘he had never seen a living human being so close to death.’ And they made the decision to leave Beck and Yasuko behind because they said there was no way they would survive, and it was going to be more dangerous for the others to attempt to bring the two in pretty dire conditions, down the mountain. So they were left there to die.
