How It All Happened

Stayner seemed to disappear into thin air. Just like that – he was gone. His family didn’t have a clue on what happened. For a long time, they wondered. Had he run away? Has he been murdered? Was he kidnapped? The only thing they could do was cling to hope and post his pictures everywhere in the hopes that one day, someone may find him.

On the afternoon of December 4, 1972, 7-year old Stayner was approached by a man named Ervin Edward Murphy. Little did the boy know that Murphy was just a puppet behind a true mastermind. He was simply following the instructions of Kenneth Parnell. He asked for donations for a church he served. When Stayner said that he had no money on him, he then asked if they could go to his mom. The innocent one said yes, not knowing that this car ride would change his life.
