Parnell had allowed Stayner to drink even at a young age. He also worked several menial jobs if he wasn’t in school. In fact, sometimes, work required him to travel, which worried Parnell because this would actually be his chance to escape. However, there was also something at home that made it impossible for him to leave.

Stayner’s life was a living nightmare, and the one thing that made him look forward to going home was the dog Parnell had given him. He had a Manchester terrier that he named Queenie, and it was a gift from Parnell’s mom to her own son. Little did she know then that her son was harboring a hostage at home, a little boy that he took advantage of sexually.
