Sadly for Hortense and her family, someone would end up betraying the family by telling the Gestapo about what they were doing. Their home was raided and the family was taken into custody, getting beaten and questioned brutally by the members of Hitler’s army. She was then separated from her father, who was sent to the Buchenwald Concentration Camp, while she and her mother were sent elsewhere and experimented on. Incredibly, they all survived to tell the tale.
