She Refused

After being coerced to get on a train meant to take Fernande to one of the labor camps, she managed to jump off and walk to her uncle’s house. There, she begged him to allow her to join the Belgian Resistance, and although he was reluctant at first, he knew he had no choice but to give in.

She Spoke German

Along with her false ID and her ability to speak German, she was luckily able to trick many of the Nazi soldiers into believing that she was a part of their movement. And because of this, her work as a courier for the Army of Liberation allowed her to help fight against Hitler’s monstrous ways. Thankfully, she not only survived the war, but she even went on to marry an American soldier and move to the United States.
