Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster

The Chernobyl disaster of 1986 was considered the world’s worst nuclear power accident in history. 65 miles away from Kiev, Ukraine, engineers were performing a test on four nuclear reactors, eventually causing an explosion that released 50 tons of radioactive material into the air. From April 25 to April 26, 1986, the plant spewed so much waste that 32 people died, with many more getting sick over the next few days. And in the long run, it was said that thousands died due to cancer and other sicknesses related to radiation.

Tiananmen Square Massacre

Almost a million Chinese citizens gathered in the Tiananmen Square in Beijing in protest, gathering together to fight for the resignation of Chinese Communist Party leaders. For over three weeks, adults, students and the like would stand for hours, holding vigils in the hopes that the government would have a change of heart. Then on June 4, 1989, Chinese military ripped through the square with tanks, guns and a slew of bullets, killing thousands, showing their strength and declaring martial law, rather than opening up the chances for democracy.
