Over 28 years after the wall was erected, on November 9, 1989, the commencement of the fall of the Berlin Wall began. One of the spokespeople for East Berlin’s communist party shared that they were finally going to begin the unification of Germany. It was said that over 2 million people from both East and West Berlin joined in to begin breaking down the wall, with a reporter exclaiming that it was “the greatest street party in the history of the world.”

Nelson Mandela Was Released From Prison

Nelson Mandela, the man behind the fight against apartheid who had been jailed for over 27 years, was finally released from prison on February 11, 1990. Thanks to President F. W. de Klerk, who would take over the South African presidency in 1989, had hoped to finally put an end to apartheid. He chose to release Mandela, finally setting him free, after which Mandela himself would eventually become the South African President from 1994 to 1999.
