The Golliwog doll was a 19th century ragdoll that first came about as far back as 1895 as a character in popular children’s books. Somehow, it was recreated once again in the early 2000s and sold, much to the chagrin of most consumers. The doll, which was meant to be a depiction of African Americans, even embodied the same clothing that they would be shown wearing during minstrel shows, which mocked those of African American descent. Thank goodness they were finally taken down from toy shelves once and for all.

There is no denying the fact that both little girls and boys love playing with baby dolls. But what can’t be denounced is the fact that Costco managed to sell an African American Doll with a headband saying ‘lil’ monkey’ along with it’s very own monkey stuffed doll, monkey rattle, stuffed banana and monkey themed bib. Even if it wasn’t their intention to be racist, they certainly hit the mark perfectly on its very ethnocentric head.
