The Whole “Non-profit”
For many years, the NFL was classified as a non-profit (these are typically charities, educational organization, and the like) by the federal government for tax purposes. Surprisingly, earning them a huge cut on their annual tax bill. Finally, in April 2015, the NFL gave up their non-profit status. Nonetheless, the NFL makes so much profit that being taxed like any other corporation would not make any dent than when they paid non-profit taxes.
