30. Camden, Arkansas
Camden, Arkansas’ rich history dating back to the 17th century makes it an excellent educational destination, especially for Civil War enthusiasts. The city, located overlooking the Ouachita River, was first known as a French trading post called Ecore Fabre, and was the Queen City of the Ouachita during the steamboat era. Popular attractions in Camden include Oakland Cemetery, which is on the National Register of Historic Places as the largest Confederate cemetery in the area.
Despite its colorful past, Camden finds itself plagued by the dark social problems of the present, particularly that of criminality. In 2017, the incidents of violent crime in the city was listed at 1,500 per 100,000 residents, earning it a spot in this list of dangerous cities in the USA.
