Saginaw, Michigan, a former lumber town in the late 1800s and an automotive manufacturing town later in the 20th century, appears next on our list of the most dangerous cities in the world, no thanks to a confluence of economic factors that lead to making ends meet difficult in the area.

The downturn of both the logging industry in the early 1900s, as well as the slowing down of car manufacturing in the late 1900s have brought down employment rate in the city. Efforts to revitalize the city has helped, although minimally, with 1 in 10 of its residents still jobless, and almost 1 in every 3 residents living under the poverty line.

Statistically, places that have high poverty and employment rates see a surge in criminality, a reality that holds true in Saginaw.
