Visitors will be surprised that it is possible to get very close to the Chernobyl reactor. During the clean-up, radiation levels near the reactor were reduced compared to the other areas of the exclusion zone. The primary reason for this is that Soviet’s had to carefully scan and clear the area since the other reactors at the Chernobyl power plant continued in operation for almost fifteen years after the cataclysmic accident.
