Blast from the Past

The failed attempt of workers for an emergency shutdown caused an exponentially larger power surge. According to some reports, the reactor jumped to around ten times the normal operation output causing a violent rupture. The resulting explosion sent a fiery plume of highly radioactive fallout into the atmosphere and over a huge geographical area.
