9. Facial Weakness and Twitching
Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that affects the nerves of the brain and spinal cord, causing important sensory and motor signals to go awry. One of the nerves affected by this condition is the facial nerve, a cranial nerve responsible for moving the muscles of the face.
When the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the facial nerve, muscles of the face lose their tone and their strength, causing weakness to one side of a patient’s face. Facial nerve lesions due to MS may also cause the facial muscles to spasm and twitch, a condition that causes discomfort to those affected by the disease.
