Sudden loss of vision in one eye due to the inability of the optic nerve to transmit signals to the part of the brain responsible for seeing can happen in patients suffering from MS. This happens when the patient’s immune system attacks the optic nerve, causing what is known as optic neuritis. Approximately 50% of people with MS will experience some form of visual problem due to optic neuritis which is usually the first symptom of the disease.
