Safety first. That rule seems to be taken for granted in many zoos and animal preserves everywhere. And safety includes making sure that the gates to each animal’s enclosures are kept closed and locked at all times. At a zoo in Florida, a zoo keeper named Stacey Konwiser, 38 was attacked by a 350-pound, 12-year-old male tiger. The animal lunged at her while she entered the enclosure to prepare for a presentation.

The huge animal was so powerful and overwhelming that when it attacked Stacey, her spine was fractured, and jugular was severely lacerated. She died of her injuries. During the attack, she was able to send out a cry for help through her radio. But rescuers weren’t quick enough to save the woman. When they arrived, it was too late.
