27. Female zoo keeper mauled by tiger in Spain

Even some individuals trained to execute safety measures at a zoo sometimes fall victims to the animals they are watching over. A female zoo keeper in Benidorm, Spain’s Terra Natura Zoo died while on cleaning duty next to a tiger’s pen. The zookeeper came into contact with the tiger which mauled her to death when the gate separating the pen where she was in from the animal’s enclosure was left open.

Responding zoo keepers shot the animal with sedative darts to put it to sleep. When emergency responders arrived, the woman was pronounced dead. It wasn’t clear how the safety protocols were breached which lead to the incident.
