Shark Aggressively Went After The Surfer

.

During the interview immediately following the incident, a clearly jolted and terrified Fanning said that he was lucky to come out of something like that, alive. When asked about the experience, the surfer said that he felt like his leg leash got caught on something when something large bumped his board. His reaction was to jump away as he saw that it was a shark coming after his surf board. While he was in the water, he said that he was half-expecting a large mouthful of teeth to come at him as he tried to swim away. When asked if he got any punches in, Fanning nervously yet happily says that he was able to punch his attacker on its back.

But this isn’t the end of Fanning’s brushes with sharks. In the same competition at Jefferys Bay in 2017, a large 10-foot shark was once again spotted in the area while Mick and fellow competitor, Gabriel Medina were out at sea. Organizers were able to spot the predator early and decided to pluck Medina and Fanning to safety, preventing a not-so-welcome reunion of sorts between the surfer and his attacker from 2015.
