A Volcanologist On Mount St. Helens 13 Hours Before Eruption.

For scientists out on the field, gathering of important data in the pursuit of knowledge amidst hazardous environments is part of the job. One such scientist is 31 year-old volcanologist David Johnson who happened to be in the vicinity of Mt. St. Helens in the days leading to her eruption in 1980.

Johnson was the first to report of the volcano’s increasing activity, during which he took this snapshot 6 miles away from the base of the mountain. Despite that distance, the doomed scientist was killed by the powerful lateral eruption that happened merely hours after the photograph was taken.

Dutch tourists Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon were backpackers visiting Panama hoping to go on a guided trek in the jungle until the unexplainable happened. For some reason, the two decided to brave the trip early and go on their own one day before schedule, a big mistake as they disappeared without a trace save for a backpack containing personal articles, phones and a camera, all of which were discovered weeks later.

Disturbing and puzzling photos were discovered in the camera and an inspection of the phones revealed that they were attempting to call for help 11 times before their batteries died out.Skeletal remains of the girls were eventually discovered but no explanation about their deaths have been offered and thus, still remain a mystery.
