William Mckinley was the 25th President of the US. He was the last president to have served in the Civil War…and the only one who started as an enlisted soldier. In 1876 he was elected to Congress, and secured the Republican nomination for president in 1896. He led the nation into the Spanish-American War of 1898…which the Americans won quickly and decisively. As part of the peace settlement, Spain turned over its main colonies in Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.
