An American Founding Father and principal author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson was America’s 3rd President. A lawyer and politician, he spoke several languages, was a talented mathematician and had in-depth knowledge of mechanics and architecture. He was a spokesman for democracy, and embraced the principles of republicanism and the rights of the individual with worldwide influence. Upon retiring as President, he founded the University of Virginia.
