Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., served as the 26th President of the United States, and was also an author, adventurer, naturalist, soldier (the Rough Riders) and historian. He was known for his rugged machismo and “cowboy” persona. He was President McKinley’s Assistant Secretary of the Navy, but resigned the position to lead the Rough Riders into battle during the Spanish-American War. He returned home a war hero, which cemented his career in politics. He became McKinley’s running mate as vice-president in the 1900 election. He took office as Vice-President in March of 1901, and became President after the assassination of McKinley in September. He remains the youngest person to become President at the age of 42.
