He served as the eight President, and was the first president born after the independence of the United States from the British Empire. He was a founder of the Democratic Party, and won the presidency with an endorsement of the popular outgoing President Andrew Jackson, and the organizational strength of the Democratic Party. He was a shrewd politician, and earned the nicknames “ Little Magician” and “Red Fox” for his cunning politics. He was born to a family of Dutch Americans, and was the only President who spoke English as a second language. Van Buren died at the of 79 of bronchial asthma and heart failure. He outlived all four of his immediate successors – Harrison, Tyler, Polk, and Taylor. Despite this, he is not one of the longest lived presidents. He was included in the 2014 Time Magazine article “The Top 10 Forgettable Presidents.”
