James Buchanan was the 15th President from 1857 to 1861. He is also the only president to remain a bachelor.Often called “doughface” – a Northerner with Southern sympathies…historians fault him for his failure to address the issue of slavery and the secession of the southern states, bringing the nation close to civil war.No wonder historians consider him to be one of the worst presidents in American history. The Civil War erupted within two months after his retirement. He was accused of colluding with the Confederacy. He received many angry letters which led to his depression and weakening health. He died on June 1, 1868, of respiratory failure at the age of 77.
