Lyndon Baines Johnson known as LBJ was the 36th President of the US, who assumed the position after the assassination of JFK -John F. Kennedy. Johnson was a high school teacher and worked as a congressional aide before winning an election to the House of Representatives in 1937. In 1948 he became a Senator. Unsuccessful in the 1960 nomination for the presidential election, he accepted JFK’s invitation to be his running mate. They eventually defeated Nixon and his running mate. Upon succeeding JFK, he instilled several domestic policies expanding civil rights, public broadcasting, medicare, and so on. His “War on Poverty” helped millions of Americans rise above the poverty line during his term. Unfortunately for him, his foreign policy escalating American involvement in the Vietnam War proved to be troublesome for his career and popularity…with the rise of the anti-war movement. He left office in 1969.
