James Madison Jr., was the 4th President of the United States, better known as “The Father of the Constitution” for drafting the US Constitution and championing the Bill of Rights. He was also a lawyer, diplomat, statesman, and philosopher. He came from a prominent Virginia planter family, alternatively known as the Southern aristocracy. After the Constitution had been drafted, he became one of the leaders in the movement to ratify it. Together with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay, they wrote the Federalist Papers. This was a series of pro-ratification essays considered to be one of the most influential works of political science in American history. He is officially memorialized with the James Madison Memorial Building, which is a building of the US Library of Congress. His family’s plantation, Montpelier, is a National Historic Landmark.
