James Earl “Jimmy” Carter, Jr., served as the 39th President of the US from 1977 to 1981. Raised in rural Georgia, he started out as a simple peanut farmer who eventually served 2 terms as  a Georgia State Senator from 1963-1967, and one term as the Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. In 1976, he defeated incumbent president Gerald Ford in a relatively close election. The end of his tenure was marked by the Iran hostage crisis, the 1979 energy crisis, the Three Mile Island nuclear accident, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
