Ronald Wilson Reagan was the 40th US President. Before that he was California’s Governor…and an actor from 1937 to 1964. He was a Democrat until 1962…then became a conservative and switched to the Republican Party. In 1966 he was elected Governor of California. In 1980 he defeated incumbent President Jimmy Carter. During his first term as President, Reagan survived an assassination attempt by John Hinckley Jr. he was close to death, but managed to recover after he underwent emergency exploratory surgery. He became the first US president to survive being shot by an assassin.
