He was the 10th US President, after serving briefly as the 10th US Vice-President. After only a month into the new administration, he became President after the death of his running mate William Henry Harrison. He was the first vice-president to succeed to the presidency without election. He immediately took the oath of office, moved into the White House, and assumed full presidential powers. It set a precedent that governed future successions and was codified in the 25th Amendment. But he was not a popular President. Historians rate him as an obscure President. Most of his Cabinet resigned soon into his term. Tyler was the first President to see his veto of legislation overridden by Congress. His death was the only one in presidential history that was not to be officially recognized in Washington. This was primarily due to his allegiance to the Confederate States of America. Tyler wanted a simple funeral, but Confederate President Jefferson Davis (the only president of the Confederate States of America from 1861-1865) made a political funeral honoring Tyler as a hero to the new nation. His coffin was draped with a Confederate flag, and he is the only US president laid to rest under a flag not of the United States.
