Hoover was the 31st President of the US and was raised as a Quaker. He was an engineer, businessman, and politician. During WWI, he served as the head of the US Food Administration, and garnered international popularity for humanitarian relief efforts in Belgium. He held office (1929-1933) on the onset of the Great Depression where the US Stock Market crashed, beginning a decade of poverty, high unemployment, and plunging farm incomes to name a few setbacks. Many Americans blamed Hoover for their suffering during the depression. While he did not cause it, they believe he allowed the economic crisis to worsen during his term in office. He died in 1964 at the age of 90.
