The first President of the United States, the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Upon his death, he was eulogized as “first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen”. Historians consider him to be among the top greatest presidents of all time. He originally did not want to run for a second term, but Madison urged him not to retire for the sake of the country. No American then could imagine anybody else taking his place. He however declined to run for a third term, and set the precedent for a two-term limit.
