He was the 17th President as he was the vice president during President Lincoln’s assassination. But controversy marred his presidency. He favored quick restoration of the seceded states to the Union…and did not give protection to former slaves…in spite of his predecessor’s groundbreaking work on them. His main accomplishment was the Alaska purchase. He is known by historians to be one of the worst presidents ever.
