Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President from 1861 until his cowardly assassination in 1865. He led his country in its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis. He preserved The Union, abolished slavery, and modernized the US economy. His Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 ordering the army to protect escaped slaves, encouraging border states to outlaw slavery, and pushing through Congress the 13th Ammendment to the United States Constitution – which outlawed slavery all over the country, is his legacy.
