Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th President of the United States. As a Commanding General, he worked closely with President Abraham Lincoln…leading the Union Army to victory over the Confederacy. It was no surprise he was at odds with Lincoln’s successor, President Andrew Johnson…who was opposed to Lincoln’s beliefs on slavery and other ideas regarding the Union. Elected the youngest 19th century president in 1868, he created the Department of Justice, prosecuted the Ku Klux Klan…appointed African-Americans and Jewish-Americans to prominent federal offices. He was reelected in 1872 in spite of the Democrats and Liberal Republicans uniting behind his opponent. At the time of his death, he was memorialized as a symbol of national unity.
