Barack Hussein Obama II served as the 44th President of the United States from 2009-2017. He is the first (and only so far) African American to assume the presidency. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1961, just 2 years after the territory was admitted as the 50th state. After graduating from Columbia University in 1983, he enrolled in Harvard Law School in 1988, after working first as a community organizer in Chicago. He was elected president in 2009, and also was named the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate shortly in the same year.
