At the time of the collision, a nearby vessel could be seen off the port of the Titanic.  However, the ship’s identity remains a mystery.  Had it responded, the ship would have arrived in time to save many Titanic passengers.  Also, the SOS position the Titanic sent out was incorrect.  Nonetheless, other ships responded to the distress signal, including the Olympic, but all were too far away.  A vessel was spotted nearby, however the Titanic was not able to contact it.  The Californian was also in the vicinity, but its wireless had been turned off for the night. The Carpathia was some 58 nautical miles (107 km) away when it received the distress signal, and it would take more than three hours to reach the Titanic.
