The co-owner of Macy’s, Isidor Straus, died aboard the Titanic. He and his wife Ida were traveling back from a winter vacation in Europe when the ship hit the iceberg. His wife refused to leave Isidor and get into a lifeboat. It was reported that she gave her fur coat to her maid, stating that she would not be needing it. She expressed: “I will not be separated from my husband. As we have lived, so will we die, together.” The couple inspired the heart-wrenching scene in the epic movie entitled the Titanic directed by James Cameron. In the scene, it shows two elderly couple accepting their fate but chose to be together inside their cabin hugging each other tightly as the cold water rushed in.
