Lower Class

Steerage passengers seen waiting to board the Titanic.  According to records, second-class accommodations were equivalent to first class in most other ocean liners of the time.  Most of the third-class cabins contained four or six bunks and could hear the loud roar of the ship’s engines in their cabins at all times. According to some records, claims that passengers in steerage were prevented from boarding lifeboats but these were largely dispelled.  In the movie Titanic, during the panic and chaos, the hero and heroine were trapped together with the third-class passengers as they all try to fight for their right to live.  This dramatic scene is evocative of the real-life class struggle of that time as magnified by the tragic events of the sinking of the Titanic.
