According to reports, there were only 28 people on the first lifeboat and the capacity was 65. For the enormous size of the Titanic, only 16 wooden lifeboats and four collapsible boats were carried.  It was enough to accommodate 1,178 people which was only one-third of the ship’s total capacity.  However, it was more than legally required at that time.   More lives would have been saved given if there were more lifeboats available. Coincidently, the Titanic was only 400 miles from land when it sank. Today, new regulations have been in place to ensure that the same fate would not happen in the event of a tragic oceanic accident.
